Fiat's handsome 2+2 124 Sport Spider made its debut at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. The Ferrari 275 GTS-esque newcomer was styled and manufactured by Pininfarina and based on a shortened version of the popular 124 Saloon platform. Targeted at the American market and never sold new in the UK, the newcomer was powered by a belt-driven (a mass production first) DOHC version of the Saloon's four-cylinder pushrod unit, complete with alloy crossflow head. Initially it was 1438cc in size, but grew in stages over its twenty years of production to 1995cc, taking the power output from 96bhp to 101bhp respectively (120bhp in the case of the 1995cc turbo unit). The engine drove through either an all synchromesh manual gearbox (both four- and five-speed versions were available) or a General Motors three-speed automatic unit. Suspension was independent at the front by wishbones and coil springs and by live axle, Panhard rod and coil springs at the rear. Braking was powerful courtesy of discs all round and the steering was initially by worm and roller, but eventually by rack and pinion. The model line finally ceased in 1985 after almost 200,000 Spiders had been produced - seventy-five percent of which were destined for the American market.
The Spider on sale is an original left-hand drive federal specification car imported to the UK from California. Judging by its age, it will be fitted with the 1756cc engine and is equipped with the four-speed manual gearbox. As befits a sporty Italian number, it is finished in Red complemented by a Cream vinyl interior. The bonnet currently features some minor damage and needs repairing and refitting. Overall, the museum consider the Fiat to be a very solid car with little body rust. They class the engine as "good", the bodywork, paintwork and gearbox as "average", and the interior trim as "poor". If sorted these stylish little Fiats are a cracking drive and, with a suitable degree of TLC, this somewhat unloved example (that still starts and drives) can be recommissioned and restored to its former glory once more. It is being sold without UK registration, tax or MOT and at No Reserve.
