Volkswagen Beetle production exceeded the Ford Model T total on 17 February 1972, when the previous world record for a single model was exceeded with the 15,007,034th Beetle coming off the Wolfsburg production line. Only two years earlier, a new 1302 version of the Beetle had been launched, the 1302LS Karmann cabriolet on offer here being manufactured in 1971.
The then new 1302, still rear-wheel drive and air-cooled, employed MacPherson strut independent front suspension in place of the original torsion bars, and was easily recognisable by a more pronounced nose treatment to accommodate more luggage. There was a choice of power unit with 34 or 44 bhp 1293cc or 50 bhp 1584cc engines offered. So popular was the prewar concept that one million customers a year continued to buy them.
Imported in 1980, and converted from left to righthand drive during restoration and therefore rare, this Beetle with four-seater cabriolet body crafted by Karmann in Osnabruck was purchased by the present private owner some three years ago, and is described by him as having superb paint and very good interior and engine. With black soft top and Weber caburettor conversion, there are many bills in an extensive history file. Most Karmann cabrios, of which 331,847 were made before production ceased in 1980, were shipped to the States where the car has enjoyed cult status. This is your chance to join the cult.
Purchased by the present private owner some two years ago it is described as being in good condition throughout and has the black soft top and it has received a Webber carburettor conversion and has many bills in the history file.
A rare right hand drive car which should excite a number of people at today's sale.
