Lot details

  • A well maintained example used in classic trials and rally events
  • Subtly upgraded to TT specification
  • Acquired by the current owner in 2007
  • Sold with a large variety of spares

In 1963, NSU introduced its first model with four cylinders and double chain drive of the overhead camshaft in the NSU Prinz 1000. The air-cooled four-cylinder engine produced 43 horsepower which allowed the car to reach 84 Miles Per Hour. The Prinz 1000, and its successor models were modern for their time – and especially for the car class: the engine had a lot of potential for performance increases with an overhead camshaft and cross-flow cylinder head. Independent suspension with double wishbones on the front axle and a semi-trailing arm rear axle with rubber-mounted joints on the wheels (similar to the small rear-engine cars from FIAT) provided sporty driving characteristics that only BMW and Porsche had to offer at the time. The four-cylinder models from NSU were correspondingly popular and successful with tuners and as a basis for racing. In 1965, the TT sports variant was introduced, and a year later the even more powerful TTS was introduced in very small numbers. In February 1967, the name suffix "Prinz" was dropped and the car was then offered as NSU 1000 or the 1000 C but retained the same charming characteristics which made the 1000 and 1000 C popular to begin with.

Acquired by the vendor in 2007 as a lightly prepared regularity trials car, this NSU 1000 C has now been subtly upgraded to TT specification including enlargement of the air-cooled engine’s capacity from the original 996 cc to 1297cc, the fitting of reinforced drive shafts and UJs, along with underbody shields and twin fuel pumps. The tan cloth interior boasts a trip reader and map lights and the car is offered as a ‘ready to go’ rally and trials car. Eligible for classic trials and MCC events such as Lands End Trial and Clee Hills, it benefits from the fitment of a new competition clutch this year whilst twin spare wheels are mounted to the boot lid. A well maintained example campaigned in classic events, it is being sold with numerous spare parts including gearboxes, an engine, wheels etc. which will be available for collection from the vendor by the successful buyer or the vendor may be able to deliver them subject to negotiation. It is expected that some minor bodywork recommissioning will be carried out prior to the sale. Successful in their day, this example should offer its next owner the opportunity to have a lot of fun on historic events.
