General Motors launched the Camaro in 1966, aiming their 'Pony' car directly at Ford's top selling Mustang. Like the Ford, the GM car employed many off-the-shelf components; in the case of the Camaro, parts being raided from the Chevy II. The bodywork, however, was completely new, being a true 4-seater either in fixed head coupe or convertible form. The five engine options ranged from 3770cc 6-cylinder to 6490cc V8, with the 4949cc V8 fitted to the Z28 producing over 300bhp. The Z28 had heavy duty suspension, power-assisted disc brakes at the front and bonnet stripes. Camaros like these very quickly excelled in Trans-Am and NASCAR races.
Being auctioned here is a numbers matching SS396 Camaro. Built at the GM Chevrolet plant at Norwood, Ohio, this left-hand drive Chevy has been painted in dusk blue and has standard bucket interior in ivory with white convertible top. The car is powered by a 396cu in V8 on Rochester 4V carb, built at the Tomowanda Engine Plant, New York, and producing 350bhp, and has Turbo 400 automatic transmission.
The entrant claims that the car on offer is a former concours award winner. The 50,141 miles indicated when entered for this sale is said to be the genuine total mileage from new. Both MOT Test certificate and tax disc have been recently renewed. Interestingly, during a major Arizona auction earlier this year, a same year model as this one raised £59,000!
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has an MOT test and Road Fund Licence as stated above.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
