Tribsa, Norvin and other names evocative of the post war motorcyclist's desire to own a machine which would, hopefully, combine the best of rival manufacturer's concepts of design, handling and performance were somewhat overshadowed by the contemporary 'Triton' version, a blend of well respected Triumph and Norton components used to construct the classic 'cafe racer' of it's day. The state of the art 'Featherbed' frame with it's Roadholder forks, designed by Norton for its post-war works racers, was by the late fifties being fitted to the most mundane everyday Norton, and was freely available as a new works spare part or, more usually, obtained by special builders from a breakers yard. Also freely available from similar sources was Triumph's excellent 650 cc. twin engine from the Bonneville, which could be readily tuned for impressive outright performance if required. Combine these two main elements with special engine plates, add a few weight saving items, typically aluminium tanks, wheels, clip on bars, hump seat and your Triton would blow away most of the competition likely to line up beside you at the traffic lights and give the nod.
This example, registered DEU 355, features a "wideline featherbed" frame equipped with Norton Roadholder forks mounted with a period aftermarket alloy yoke. The frame houses a pre unit T120 Bonneville 9 stud splayed head engine fitted with twin Amal Concentric carburettors in place of the original Monobloc's. A twin leading shoe front brake graces the front wheel which, like the rear, has an alloy rim. A belt primary drive conversion, visible through windows in the primary drive case takes the power to the gearbox. The primary drive case absorbed £500 with chrome 750 Triton badging being visible through them, together with the clutch and alternator. A magneto provides the sparks and the ancillary equipment includes a Smiths 150mph Chronometric speedometer and matched tachometer, swept back exhausts, a polished alloy fuel tank and central oil tank finished to match. Built to the highest standard the motorcycle was originally intended to be fitted with a 750cc Morgo conversion, however a change of heart by the owner resulted in it remaining a 650, the 750 Morgo barrels and pistons accompany the machine should its new owner that he prefers the torque of the 750 to the smooth, easy revving nature of the 650. Unused for 5 years the motorcycle is offered today due to the owners acceptance that a machine with clip-ons and a back problem are not compatible! The motorcycle will require recommissioning prior to use and is accompanied by a Swansea V5C for the (transferable) registration number.
