Introduced in 1975, Mercedes-Benz's W123 series cars perpetuated the marque's enviable reputation for engineering integrity. Well built with a sense of solidity missing from today's model range, the W123 cars featured all round independent coil sprung suspension, disc brakes and power steering. Devoid of exterior plastic trim and regarded by some as the last of the 'chrome era' Mercedes, W123s have begun to attract a cult following. Offering the best compromise between performance and fuel economy, the most popular petrol variants were the 230E / TE models. Powered by a 2299cc OHC four-cylinder engine producing some 136bhp and 151lbft of torque and equipped with either manual or as in this case four-speed automatic transmission, they were reputedly capable of 114mph and 0-60mph in 10.2 seconds.
Finished in green with green cloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (2299cc engine, four-speed automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (chassis, bodywork, paintwork) condition. Reportedly "put in off the ground storage for approximately ten years" following the premature death of its previous keeper, 'A458 HEC' is said to have given "no problems at all" since entering the current ownership some fifteen months ago. Riding on steel wheels and stated to have covered 123,500 miles from new, this practical classic is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until October 16th 2006, road tax until October 31st 2006 and "over £200 of new spare parts including exhaust manifold, rear brake hoses and timing chain".
