In the good old days, when most of the world map in atlases was inked in red denoting the extent of the British Empire, Wolseley was one of the leading marques in the then great British motor industry. The name came from Irish-born Frederick York Wolseley who founded the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company in Australia and, in 1889, set up a British branch in Brum, where his works manager was one Herbert Austin. Apart from Austin, the other famous drivers who also steered the fortunes of this Midland brand were John Davenport Siddeley and William Morris, the car making firm belonging to Vickers for the first 26 years and thereafter William Morris and his Nuffield Organisation.
Originally manufactured in Birmingham in 1935, the Wolseley Hornet II Saloon being auctioned today - with the benefit of most attractive registration - has only fair body, paint and electrical equipment and, according to the vendor, does require restoration. However, the project should be a straightforward enough task and would reward the purchaser with a very desirable classic on completion. We are advised that the 1056cc 4-cylinder motor runs well and the transmission functions correctly and quietly. This car has been exhibited in a tableau setting of a 1930s garage in a well respected Motor Museum in recent years and has thus been dry stored in dehumifified surroundings during this time.
