Lot details Registration No: BFL245B Chassis No: 26/4097 Mot Expiry: April 2002.
A letter from Lotus with this open-top Elan S2 confirms Cheshunt works manufacture in November 1964 and immediate export to New York. Returning to the UK in 1990, it was ground-up rebuilt by the current owner to its original LHD US market spec with Lotus replacement chassis. On completion, 26/4097 was allocated UK registration BFL 245B.
Although not the original, a correct MkI Lotus-Ford Twin Cam has been fitted, professionally rebuilt to Lotus Sprint spec with new Webers, though fitted with old-style Type 18 tops, and able to run on unleaded. The clutch was replaced, new Konis fitted and suspension correctly aligned. The gearbox is the original Bullet-type four-speed as fitted to early Elans, the diff a 3.5.
The interior trim in black with ivory door panels is period-correct for a US-market car as are the rear reflectors and floor-mounted dipswitch. S1 rear lights are fitted as was the case with many early S2s. A soft top and full tonneau cover are included as are Euro-spec orange rear indicator covers, importation documents, full photo-record of the rebuild, invoices from 1990 and annual MOTs from 1997. Elans don't get much better than this A1 example.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
