FN (Fabrique Nationale de Herstal) established in 1899 had become the leading Belgian car and motorcycle brand soon after the turn of the century. Starting out with 133cc clip on engines the motorcycle range quickly expanded to include 362,412,596 and 748cc machines with ohv and side valve belt drive power units and ultimately a pre-war 992 cc BMW style motorcycle for Belgian military use. American exports began in 1908 and the first inline fours from this period up until 1924 famously incorporated shaft drive, but financial considerations dictated a change to chain transmissions thereafter. Car production had finished before WW2 after which the firm concentrated efforts on mopeds and more modern designs of motorcycle using their own 'Ilo' engines in 50,250,350,450 and 500cc versions. Even from pioneer days FN were heavily involved in competition, gaining success in sprint and long distance racing, by 1930 holding 33 world records, and post - war engaged in off road and scrambles events with 500cc machines until the mid-fifties. FN added the 'Tri-Car, an unusual 3 wheeler with Swiss coil spring front and rubber rear suspension, to moped and motorcycle production which dwindled progressively through the early sixties and the last moped left the line in '67. Thus ended the life of this pioneer manufacturer of arms, motorcars and motorcycles.
The FN 750cc inline four cylinder example in today's sale has been in a private collection for many years. No documents are in evidence and it's early history is unknown, although from the chain drive transmission would appear to be of 1924/5 model year. Best described as a 'barn find' it is substantially complete, according to the vendor, with original frame, engine and other parts but a non-runner requiring total restoration. An ideal opportunity for the pioneer enthusiast to re-create a rare and valuable machine.
