1963 Triumph TR4

Sold for £9,675

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: 1421 VT
Chassis No: CT18136
Mot Expiry: Nov 2009

Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes, the model's chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the newcomer notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder OHV engine developing some 100bhp and 127lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 104mph and 0-60mph in 10.9 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first).

Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reportedly the subject of a "body off chassis restoration using only original Stanpart panels", the Triumph is further understood to have had its "engine reworked to 'stage two' specification by TR 'Guru' Pete Cox". Fed by Weber carburettors, the upgraded unit also boasts "an alternator conversion, narrow fan-belt modification, Kenlowe electric fan, oil cooler and stainless manifold / exhaust". According to the accompanying buff logbook `1421 VT' was supplied new to Stoke on Trent. Said to have had "three previous owners", the TR4 apparently benefits from "recently retrimmed seats" and "painted wire wheels shod with fresh tyres". Seemingly a good basis for tours and endurance events, this true British classic is accompanied by a history file containing the original buff log book, assorted restoration photographs and current MOT certificate valid until November 2009.
