When VW commissioned Porsche to design a front-engined GT car for them in the early 1970s, it was decided to market the new Audi-built model with a Porsche badge, making it the first front-engined Porsche with a water-cooled engine.
However, though the 924 with its 2-litre single ohc fuel injected motor was good for 124mph, 0-60mph did take 9.5 sec and the people’s Porsche would not win any prizes in motor sport where Porsches had normally excelled. If front-engined, liquid-cooled Porsche engineering, as offered in the pop 924 and the luxurious 4.5-litre V8 928, was going to win over any air-cooled Porsche fans then a new image-boosting model was needed.
Enter the Carrera GT version of the 924 in 1980, a very limited edition turbocharged homologation special, which, when modified, could provide clients with up to 400bhp underfoot. In standard form, the GT handled and stopped like a dream and paved the way for popular acceptance of the 944 2.5-litre in 1982.
The rare 1981 GT on offer, even rarer in rhd, has been owned by the vendor for six years with servicing carried out by OPC H R Owen or leading Porsche specialist Charles Ivey. Annual mileage has averaged only 1500 whilst in current ownership. The radio is original. Bodywork and engine are reportedly good, whilst interior, transmission and tyres are said to be in very good condition.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
