Mercedes-Benz introduced their fourth generation SL, the imposing R129-series in October 1989. A technical tour de force, its balletic electric roof operation still impresses today. Now out of production, the R129 is destined to go the way of its illustrious W198, W121, W113 and R107 forebears and become a true classic. At launch, its advanced specification included all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes, power-assisted steering, remote central locking, electric front seats, door mirrors and windows. Despite having automatic transmission as standard, the R129 was the choice of many Formula One drivers during the early nineties such was its tenacious grip and fine poise. The more powerful of the two six-cylinder engines initially available, the 2962cc DOHC 24-valve M104 unit boasted Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection, cylinder specific ignition timing, variable valve timing and under-piston cooling jets. Credited with developing some 231bhp and 201lbft of torque, it reputedly enabled the 300 SL-24 to sprint from 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and reach 137mph.

This right-hand drive 300 SL-24 left Stuttgart in April 1992. Equipped with automatic transmission, it sports White bodywork complemented by a Black leather interior. We understand it has had three owners to date and is a desirable unmolested example that's covered few miles in the last six years. Its odometer now shows some 49,000 miles, a figure that seems to be supported by the MOTs and service record (the latter featuring nine stamps up to 2003/42,000 miles). The vendor currently regards the Big Merc as having "excellent" bodywork and engine, "lovely" paintwork and interior trim and "good" transmission and electrical equipment. `J458 MTY' is being sold complete with hard and soft tops and a fresh MOT. An apparently fine example of the superb R129 SL.
