BMW introduced their new range leader in 1955, typed the R69, the new model was equipped with Erales front forks and a pivoted fork frame. The over head valve 594cc engine developed 35 bhp. For the 1960 season a revised model was released offering a higher output. Typed the R69S the new model retained the cycle parts of its predecessor but now generated 42bhp. This machine was manufactured on January 25, 1962, and delivered to BMW importer Arne Rindar AB in Stockholm. It was registered as PGP 997 in Denmark, and purchased from there in 2002. It was then registered in the UK on 7 December, 2004 with an age related number. In 2006, it was fully refurbished to its present standard by engineer Neville Hayward, and is still running in. The recorded mileage on a 2004 UK test certificate was 85725 (actual reading was in kilometres) and at 27.05.09 was 85942 (53,404 miles). The speedometer has now been changed for one recording in miles, and which then read 17,298 miles. (Reading @ 19.2.10 is 17,414 miles).
The refurbishment involved a rebuilt crankshaft with new big ends by BMW experts SEP of Derby. The engine was fitted with new main bearings, oil slingers and seals and new clutch plate. The barrels showed very little wear, and were honed and fitted with new rings. The cylinder heads were fitted with new parts as required. The motor has compression plates fitted, and runs smoothly on unleaded fuel. The gearbox and solo geared differential needed only seals and bearings. New drive shaft universal joint couplings were fitted, along with stainless steel exhausts, new bearings to the wheels, front and rear swinging arms. New tyres were also fitted. The frame was powder coated, and all other metalwork finished in BMW two pack black, and hand lined. Recently, a highly rated BTH 12 volt ignition system and output generator were fitted, giving reliable easy starting and usable power. The original magneto is still available, together with a rider's instruction manual. Described as being in very good condition throughout it is offered with a Swansea V5C, a road fund licence valid until the 30th November 2010, a Mot certificate that expires on the 11th November 2010 and a dating certificate issued by BMW Mobile Tradition.
