Sports car lovers everywhere mourned the passing of TVR manufacture, and it is small wonder that a number of specialist garages currently thrive solely on the sale and service of the existing cars. While active, the comp-any remained true to its roots, producing steel-chassied sports cars clothed in striking fibreglass bodies and powered by potent engines. For many, the cream of the crop was the no-nonsense Griffith, which was manufactured from 1991 to 2002. From birth it was propelled by derivatives of the ubiquitous Rover V8 engine ranging in size from 4.0 to 5.0-litres. All versions were mated to a five-speed Rover or Tremec manual gearbox. Suspension was independent all round by double wishbones and coil springs. Braking was by 10 inch ventilated discs at each corner. The most powerful version, that equipped with the TVR-developed 5-litre engine, boasted an output of 340bhp and a 350 lb ft of torque. This was sufficient to hurl the 2310 lb two-seater to 60mph in around 4.1 seconds and on to a substantial top speed of 170mph - performance figures that would shame many a far more expensive sports car to this day.
The smartly-presented Griffith 500 now offered vacated the Blackpool factory in 1993. Its fibreglass body is finished in Metallic Blue and the interior trimmed in Beige leather. Though apparently logged as a 4.3-litre example, we understand it does in fact boast the considerably more powerful 5-litre engine. The early service history was all within the TVR franchise, while the later stamps are a mix of TVR dealers and specialist garages. We're told the appropriately registered L500 TVR was treated to a retrim and new facia in 2008. HPI shows it as having suffered Category D Damage, however, the vendor assures us the problem was limited to the bodywork alone, which has been properly repaired.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is now HPI clear. A previous owner has been in touch with the vendor to confirm it should not have been a Category D and that their insurance company have updated the records. A copy of the HPI report can be found in the documents office.
