Mot Expiry: July 2006

On paper, infusing Alec Issigonis's groundbreaking Mini with some of F1 revolutionary John Cooper's tuning expertise was always going to produce an exceptional car. In practice, it was even better. For years one of the fastest ways of getting from A-to-B cross country, the Mini Cooper's superlative handling and diminutive size also led it to repeated glory on both rally stages and racetracks alike.
Finished in antelope with a white roof and black upholstery, this particular example has led a more exciting life than most of its contemporaries. Said to have rolled off the production line on 4th November 1969, it was apparently converted to rally specification during the 1980s and driven by Simon Wheatcroft. Subsequently prepared for the 1996 Mini Monte by Mike Barker, its RAC IMSA compliant rebuild comprised a thorough de-rusting, respray, rewire, retrim and rebuild of its engine / gearbox assembly etc. Consuming one litre of oil and one litre of coolant throughout the entire 2,300 mile event, it also managed to average 26mpg and helped secure the "1st team prize". Thought to have covered an additional 1,700 miles since then, its chassis and bodywork are described by the vendor as rust-free. Still fitted with its 'Monte' proven 998cc A-series engine / four-speed manual gearbox, other reminders of its sporting past include bucket seats, alloy wheels, external bonnet / boot catches and additional instrumentation. A potentially inexpensive entry into historic rallying, it is offered for sale with MOT current until 18th July 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until 31st March 2006.
