The Mustang is a pillar of American automotive lore - Lee Iacocca's dream car that brought sporting dash and styling to the new American baby-boom generation, at a price almost anyone could afford. The new ponycar was shown to the public for the first time inside the Ford Pavilion at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964, and went on sale at Ford dealers that same day. By the end of that model year, traditionally starting and ending in August, Ford had sold an amazing 126,538 - 97,705 coupes and 28,833 convertibles. V8-engined Mustangs outsold straight-six equipped cars by nearly three to one. In the 1965 model year, sales ramped up to a staggering 559,451 Mustangs and the '66 was even more popular, selling 499,751 coupes, 35,698 fastbacks and 72,119 convertibles - a total of 607,568 cars, the most Mustangs ever sold during a single model year. This potent package was destined to go straight out on the race track, and its first appearance was as pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500 less than a month after its launch. Then it was on to the drag strips, in Holman-Moody prepared form - and when it hit the circuits in 1965, Shelby-prepared GT350Rs won five of the Sports Car Club of America's six divisions, driven by Jerry Titus, Bob Johnson and Mark Donohue, Titus winning the SCCA B-Production national championship. GT 350s won the B-Production title again in 1966 and 1967, clinching the 1966 manufacturers' championship in the inaugural SCCA Trans-Am series, and repeating the win the following year.

The Mustang remains one of the smartest choices to win in historic racing, offering plenty of V8 horsepower in a compact, light and good-handling package, a view fully endorsed by Simon Hope, Managing Director of H&H Sales Ltd and who is selling the car in front of you, as he owns and races a Mustang coupe near-identical to this one. The basis for this very successfully campaigned car is a Dearborn-built '66 hardtop fitted from new with a 289cu in (4736cc) V8 and now producing a dyno-tested 380bhp and 335lb ft of torque, making it more potent than Titus' winning cars of '65 and '66. In the seven years it has been racing it has put up strong performances all over Europe, outright wins including first place in the European Touring Cars race at Spa in 2003 and several victories in HSCC historic saloons in 2007. In "excellent overall" condition, it is fresh from refurbishment, its engine having run for only four hours since. With FIA Appendix K papers, this well-sorted car, attractively finished and riding on expensive Halibrand alloy wheels, is eligible for Top Hat, Masters and European Touring Car championships. There's also a massive cache of spares, too large to list in full here but including gearbox, differential, 10 more wheels and tyres and numerous suspension parts. As its owner says: "A complete race car package". A spare FIA-legal Tim Adams-built 289cu in V8 race engine is available by separate negotiation.
