When it came to replacing the classic 900, Saab’s paymasters General Motors were looking for a lightly restyled Vectra. Typically, they didn’t get it. The NG900, later renamed 9-3, so comprehensively departed from its GM underpinnings that little was left. That was good news for buyers, who got a typically innovative and well-engineered car with an ultra-reliable 2-litre turbocharged Saab engine.
