Lot details
Registration No: CSU 437
Chassis No: 22510
Mot Expiry: July 2011

The TA 14 was Alvis's first post war offering and was sold from 1946 to 1950, at which point the model was superseded by the TA21. The TA 14 was available in two configurations: a four-door Saloon with body by Mulliners of Birmingham, or a two-door Drophead with body by either Tickford or Carbodies. The model was based on a widened and lengthened pre-war Alvis 12/70 chassis and retained that car's leaf spring suspension and mechanically operated brakes. However, whereas the 12/70 was equipped with wire wheels, the newcomer was fitted with steel disc rims. The Alvis was powered by an enlarged 12/70 engine - a four cylinder unit of 1,892cc fed by a single SU carburetter and producing 65bhp. This was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. The Alvis had a top speed of around 74mph and could reach 60mph in just over 22 seconds. Some 3,311 examples of the model are said to have been produced in the four years of production.

The right-hand drive TA 14 Saloon on offer was built in 1946. It has maroon coachwork and a beige leather interior. This is believed to be a very well documented car which has apparently had just five owners from new and only one since 1986. The history file is said to contain the names and addresses of each custodian, plus the original buff log book, handbooks and maintenance guide. We understand the car was treated to a major restoration some 15 to 18 years ago, during which the body was removed and things renovated as required. The engine was overhauled and a new exhaust and fresh tyres fitted. The brightwork was rechromed and the interior blessed with a new roof lining and carpets, plus re-trimmed seats. There are reportedly a number of photos on file showing the extent of work carried out. 'CSU 437' was then dry stored for 12 years, only recently resurfacing. Following a bare metal respray, a new stainless steel fuel tank and a good service, the car is now rated by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. It has a brand new MOT.
