The Mercedes-Benz 280SL is directly related to the 230SL which replaced the 190SL at the 1963 Geneva Show. The 230SL had a wider body and, though, still a 2-seater, offered more room inside for weekend gear. It was powered by a 2281cc fuel-injected six which produced 150bhp and gave the auto-shift version a 124mph top speed. Whilst the model's quest to be considered a real sports car was certainly helped by German rally driving legend Eugen Bohringer winning the Spa-Sofia-Liege in one. 19,831 230SLs were sold.
However, Merc fans wanted even more grunt for autobahn and col storming, hence the 2496cc 250SL brought out in 1966. Only 5196 were built and, fairly soon, the 2778cc 280SL was being manufactured in Stuttgart 1967-1971. Now with a 180bhp six underbonnet and up to 121mph on tap, 23,885 SL customers were happy again.
The West Yorkshire entrant of this 1970-built 280SL tells us that the roadster has been restored over the last five years with a £6000 rebuild of the 2.8-litre 6-cylinder engine carried out by a local marque specialist with receipt on file. The bodywork is said to be very still to be very solid with metallic blue paintwork described as being in A1 condition and cherry red interior fair. The 78,423 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for this sale is claimed to be total mileage since new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
