1968 Vanden Plas Princess DM4 Limousine

The DM4 was the ultimate incarnation of Austin's Princess line that dated back to 1947. In Limousine form it was luxuriously appointed with ample polished wood, while the lengthy options list included mohair rugs, a radio with controls in the armrest, and even monograms and a flagstaff. The driving compartment was separated from the passenger area by a division and seating capacity could readily be increased from five to seven courtesy of a pair of foldaway chairs. Power came from Austin's venerable 3995cc OHV straight-six unit, while steering was by cam and peg and the suspension comprised coil springs at the front and a live axle on leaf springs at the rear. When tested by Motor magazine, an automatic DM4 achieved 60mph in 23.5 seconds and a respectable top speed of 86.2mph. Only 200 of these Vanden Plas-built models were made.
This Black and Cream DM4 was resprayed and retrimmed in leatherette (White for the passenger seats and Brown for the driver's seat one) by the vendor's company in 2004. The engine has also been refurbished and equipped with electronic ignition, and a stainless exhaust system fitted from the downpipe backwards. The vendor describes the engine, gearbox, interior trim and bodywork as "good" but notes that the paintwork "now needs slight attention". The MOT lasts into March 2013.
