Founded by James Lansdowne Norton, Norton has become one of the legendary marques of the once great British motorcycle industry. A Norton v-twin won the 2-cylinder class of the 1907 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. By 1924, Norton had won both the Senior and Sidecar TTs on the Island, whilst the 1930s saw their bikes winning every Senior and Junior TT. Pre and post-WW2, Norton had become the preferred choice of bikers seeking race-bred handling and high performance.
Such successes on road and track, however, could not prevent severe financial problems. For in 1953, the Birmingham firm was acquired by Associated Motor Cycles, owners of AJS and Matchless, and bike production was finally shut down altogether at the famous Bracebridge Street Norton works and transferred instead to AMC premises in South London in 1963.
According to the entrant of this 500c single-cylinder Manx Norton, the matching numbers bike has been stored well having been long-term resident in a bike collection. Indeed, no collection, including yours of course, should be without a Manx Norton.
