Lot details
Registration No: B677KMO
Chassis No: 24501
Mot Expiry: Oct 2006

Introduced to the UK market in 1981, the Starion Turbo was intended to compete with the likes of the Toyota Celica, Mazda RX-7 and Porsche 924. Built around a two-door monocoque shell, its advanced specification included all-round independent suspension (MacPherson strut front, coil-sprung rear), ventilated disc brakes (later available with single-channel ABS), power-assisted steering and a limited slip differential. Arriving in 1985, the so-called MKIII version was distinguished by a more aerodynamic nose, simpler C-post styling, smoked rear light lenses and larger 15-inch alloy wheels. Benefiting from a new water-cooled turbocharger and air-to-air intercooler, its 1997cc 4G63 SOHC four-cylinder engine (a relative of the unit found in today's Lancer Evolution IX) developed 177bhp and 214lbft of torque. Allied to a five-speed manual gearbox, it endowed the Starion with ferocious acceleration (Autocar magazine recording 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds, 0-100mph in 18 seconds and 140mph flat out during a 22nd May 1985 road test). A regular sight in 1980s Group A and Group N circuit racing, the Mitsubishi was driven to numerous victories by Colin Blower and Dave Brodie, while Pentti Arikkala used one to finish second behind Jimmy McRae in the 1988 British Rally Championship. Only 1,000 or so examples of this model were reputedly imported to the UK, many of which have since been 'chipped' / thrashed or subjected to a high mileage.
Finished in metallic pewter with tan leather upholstery, this particular Starion Turbo is described by the vendor as being in excellent order with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reportedly purchased new by an RAF Officer whilst serving on the Continent, it was not registered with Swansea until his return home in 1987. Tucked away in the family garage when another posting took him overseas the following year, it has only recently been liberated. Said to have covered just 32,000 miles and to be in "unique, original showroom condition", it is still apparently shod with its first set of Pirelli tyres. Freshly re-commissioned, MOT tested (its certificate expires in October 2006) and serviced by a marque specialist, this cult classic is offered for sale entirely without reserve.
