Lot 48

1967 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow MPW

Estimated at £32,000 - £40,000

Lot details
Registration No: HSA249E
Chassis No: CRX1937

- Copies of factory records on file state the car was manufactured in March 1967 and delivered new to Texas, USA

- Factory options specified included electric windows, Sundym glass, hazard warning device, and a lowered steering column bracket

- Finished in a most striking colour combination and described by the vendor as being in very good to excellent condition

This splendid two-door Saloon would impress in any company, the clean lines penned by Rolls' in-house designer John Polwhele Blatchley seemingly as fresh today as when first seen almost exactly 50 years ago. A lefthand drive example, it was delivered new to its first owner, Mr William Mitch Jnr. of Fort Worth, Texas on March 16 1967. The many factory options selected include: electric aerial, electric windows, Sundym glass, hazard warning device and lowered steering column bracket, and the accompanying bill of sale confirms a total cost, including shipping from London to Houston, of £8,548.

The Rolls-Royce is resplendent in the contrasting combination of Black coachwork and sumptuous Regal Red hide interior. The odometer currently displays an unwarranted 55,410 miles and the vendor presently classifies the interior trim as 'excellent' and the bodywork, paintwork, V8 engine and automatic transmission as 'very good'. When tested, we found it to be in lovely condition with beautiful woodwork. It changed gear smoothly and was devoid of unwanted noises. 'HAS 249E' is now available complete with the aforementioned bill of sale, copies of the factory records and a fresh MOT. A fine example of a splendid breed.

The Shadow's arrival in 1965 did much to reverse the notion that Rolls-Royce was falling behind the times and resulted in many firsts for the company, including: unitary construction rather than separate body/chassis units, disc rather than drum brakes and independent rear suspension. Though shorter and narrower than the Silver Cloud III it replaced, the John Polwhele Blatchley-penned newcomer nevertheless possessed greater space for both luggage and passengers and certainly boasted far more contemporary looks. At launch it was powered by a 172bhp V8 engine of 6230cc. The elegant two-door version of the Shadow was introduced in 1966.
