Lot details
Registration No: 181 XUN
Chassis No: A3005654.HS0
Mot Expiry: None

Launched in the summer of 1948, the Sunbeam Talbot 90 replaced the now outmoded 2-litre model and was notable for its new streamlined body with flowing front wings and integral headlamps. The underpinnings were, however, more familiar, the chassis being a wide track version of the pre-WW2 Sunbeam-Talbot Ten one, with leaf sprung beam axles front and rear. Power came from a Humber-derived 1944cc OHV four-cylinder unit. This was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox with column-mounted change. Some 4000 examples of this MKI one version were produced. The MKII was introduced at the close of 1950 and featured a number of worthwhile upgrades. For example the chassis now sported independent front suspension by coil springs, while the engine capacity was increased to 2267cc, thereby raising the output to 70bhp. The front of the body was also modified, with the headlamps raised by three inches to meet American regulations and the driving lamps replaced by intake grilles. The newcomer was available as a four-door Saloon or a two-door Drophead Coupe with bodywork by Thrupp & Maberly. Some 5493 examples of the MKII were made. The 90 was the last model to carry the Sunbeam-Talbot badge: the final version of the line being called simply the Sunbeam MKIII. This range of Talbots enjoyed considerable success in competition - especially on the Monte Carlo Rally where Stirling Moss achieved 2nd overall in a 90 and Per Malling won the 1955 event outright in a MKIII.

'181 XUN' was reportedly purchased new by Anthony Long of Broadstone, Dorset on November 13th 1951 and cherished by him until it was laid up some twenty years later. It remained that way until rescued by the vendor in 2003. The engine was seized but, once freed off, the bores were found to be virtually unworn and consistent with the indicated mileage of just 14,709 miles. The car is said to remain very original with the paint and chrome having only been refreshed as necessary.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle does not have an MOT.
