Aimed squarely at the profitable US market, the Riley RMC Roadster was launched in 1948. Based on the same low-slung chassis as its RMB saloon sibling, its sleek two-door bodywork featured cutaway doors, a compact hood, fold-flat windscreen and three-abreast seating. An engaging drive courtesy of independent torsion-bar front suspension, a 'live' rear axle, Girling four-wheel hydro-mechanical drum brakes and rack-and-pinion steering, it was powered by a 2443cc 'twin-cam' four-cylinder engine mated to four-speed manual transmission. Quoted as having some 100bhp and 134lbft of torque on tap, it was reputedly capable of over 90mph. Neither glamorous enough (think Jaguar XK120) nor quaint enough (think MG TC) to win over the American public the RMC was quietly dropped in 1951 after just 507 are thought to have been made.
Finished in red with beige leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim and coachwork (while, he rates the paintwork as "average"). Reportedly "an original right-hand drive car that was extensively restored following its repatriation from America during 1990", `WSU 886' had later been dry stored for several years and was in need of recommissioning when it entered the current ownership via our February 2003 Buxton auction. Made roadworthy again thanks to the fitting of "a new oil pump, stainless steel exhaust, re-cored radiator and all new brake cylinders (including the master), the Roadster is said to "drive very well except for a non-functioning fuel gauge" and to have "completed the Riley RM Club's Round Britain Tour in 2005". Thought to have been overhauled by a previous keeper, the engine apparently benefits from "later Riley RMF conrods fitted with shell bearings which are much more resilient than the original white metal bearings". While the seller further informs us that "there are one or two marks on the bodywork and some microblistering to the paintwork in a few areas but the body is basically very sound". Riding on steel wheels and sporting discreet flashing indicators, this rare open-topped Riley is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2009.
