The 2002 was made by BMW in Munich from 1968 until 1976. Essentially the 2002 consists of the 2000 motor in the 1602 bodyshell, either a 2-door booted-saloon, a 2-door cabriolet by coachbuilders Baur or a 3-door hatchback called the 2002 Touring. A total of 348,988 2002s were made. The model helped greatly to broaden the Bavarian marque’s appeal and make them the world player they have become today, making, as they do, the Mini, current US Car of the Year, as well as the Williams F1 engine.
The Warwickshire owner of the 1972-manufactured Touring version of the BMW 2002 being auctioned tells us that his is a very good example of this extremely practical and sporting classic that has been used regularly and well maintained. He describes the body, green paintwork and tan trimmed interior as all being in very good condition. The same goes for the 1990cc 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed gearbox. The service history on file, he says, is vast and the 104,000 miles indicated when entered for this sale is claimed to be the genuine total mileage driven since new.
