Lot 44

1951 Alvis TA21 Tickford Drophead Coupe

Estimated at £30,000 - £35,000

Lot details
Registration No: MLY 914
Chassis No: 24234
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

1 of just 303 Alvis TA21 Drophead Coupes made, chassis 24234 was first road registered as `MLY 914' on January 1st 1952 (interestingly the sister numberplate `MLY 913' was worn by another Tickford-bodied TA21 DHC which contested the 1954 Tulip Rally). Supplied new to butchers Matthews & Son of Paddington via Alvis concessionaire Brooklands of Bond St, the four-seater then passed to precision engineers Rotheroe & Mitchell of Perivale and carpet wholesalers A.M. Sayer & Co of Welling before being acquired by Norma Page (later Norma Turner) of East Ham in August 1963. Entrusted to renowned marque specialist Red Triangle by her some thirty-six years later, chassis 24234 was subjected to an extensive restoration that is rumoured to have cost nigh-on £60,000. As well as having attention paid to its 3-litre straight-six engine, four-speed manual gearbox, suspension, steering, radiator, brakes and wiring, the car underwent numerous ashframe and bodywork repairs. Refinished in its original Black livery and re-trimmed using Maroon leather upholstery, `MLY 914' was re-united with Mrs Turner on 16th May 2001 at 85,936 miles. Sold to Brian Salmon of Wethersfield some five years later, the TA21 has been in the current (sixth) ownership since July 2007. Now showing 82,138 miles to its replacement odometer, chassis 24234 is understood to have covered less than 1,700 post-refurbishment miles. Described by the vendor as being in "very good" (bodywork, paintwork) or "excellent" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim) condition, he nonetheless notes the presence of a crease to the driver's door, small dent to the offside front wing and sundry chromework blemishes. Running well upon inspection, the Alvis has been maintained by P&A Wood among others over the last six years. Worthy of close inspection, `MLY 914' is accompanied by a leather-bound history file, original instruction manual and copy of `Alvis Three Litre In Detail' by David Culshaw.
