BMW set up their separate BMW Motor Sport GmbH subsidiary company in 1972 to handle the Munich manufacturers motor sporting activities, their first limited production high performance model being the M1, 400 of which were made to be eligible for Group IV racing. The mid-engined M1 coupe with steel chassis and GRP bodywork with 3453cc 6-cylinder motor producing 277bhp and ZF 5-speed transaxle paved the way for a run of further M models derived from regular production BMW Series - such as the M635CSi coupe, three generations of M3, three M5s based on the medium-sized 5 Series executive saloon, and the top of the range 155mph Z3 roadster with 3201cc 321bhp six underbonnet.
This Northern-entered M5 offered here was originally BMW's Press Car in 1988. Being the subject of road tests and therefore much exposure to the media, this, the ultimate version of the 5 Series has been fully loaded with every possible extra including full leather interior, air-con, on-board cockpit computer and factory-fit sunroof. The 6-cylinder engine has been in receipt of a full rebuild carried out not many miles ago by leading marque specialists Munich Legends. The history file supplied with this extremely rapid motor car is described by the entrant as being 'fabulous'. If you want one of the best examples of the rare M5 around, this luxurious flier would appear to be it.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has an MOT test and Road Fund Licence as stated above. Also the estimate on this vehcile has changed from that printed in the catalogue to £7,000 - £9,000.
