Launched on the 20th October 1948 the American market took to the XK120 immediately and the demand caught Jaguar by surprise. Many Hollywood stars ordered one, which only enhanced Jaguar's image and sales, and in the early days most XK120's went across the Atlantic and it was immediately apparent that the level of demand could only be satisfied by moving from a lightweight alloy-bodied ash frame construction to steel coachwork. This took time and the initial 57 right hand drive cars and 183 left hand drive cars were hand built with a lightweight aluminium alloy.
The car that we offer today is one of those early cars, still with its brass plate on the dashboard, and in its original left hand drive format. It was re-imported from the United States during the late 1980's where it had been extensively restored whilst retaining its original specification. During the last ten years the car has received attention to the coachwork by RS panels and it has had disc brakes and new chrome wire wheels fitted to the factory specification and the rear axle was changed from an ENV to Salisbury XK120 axle. Over £20,000 has been spent during this period including regular servicing and maintenance.
Previously owned by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame, this is a very rare and highly desirable car and if you could find another example for sale it would probably not be as good as this one.
