1977 Porsche 924 Martini Edition

Estimated at £3,000 - £4,000

Lot details
Registration No: TUT 85R
Chassis No: 9247104433
Mot Expiry: Sept 2010

Contracted to engineer a flagship sports coupe for VW-Audi in the early 1970s (codenamed EA435), Porsche were only too glad to buy back the design rights when their client ran into financial difficulties. Paying DM 100 million for the privilege (somewhat less than they had charged for the work) they readily agreed to VW's stipulation that the new car be built at the latter's Neckarsulm plant. Suitably reworked, the Harm Lagaay-styled EA435 was unveiled to the world as the Porsche 924 in 1975. Based around a monocoque bodyshell equipped with MacPherson strut front and trailing-arm rear suspension, the handsome coupe boasted a 50:50 weight distribution thanks to its rear-mounted transaxle. Powered by a 1984cc SOHC four-cylinder engine developing some 125bhp and 121lbft of torque, the practical 2+2 seater was reputedly capable of 125mph and 0-60mph in 9.5 seconds. Noted for its tenacious roadholding, some unkind pundits remarked that the 924 handled too neutrally for a Porsche! Introduced in 1977, the Porsche 924 Martini & Rossi Edition or Championship Edition (factory order number M426) was limited to 3,000 units worldwide of which just 100 were earmarked for Britain. Visually distinguished by its Grand Prix White paintwork, multi-coloured Martini striping, orange carpets / seat inserts and white alloy wheels, the model was priced at £7,673 and carried a dashboard plaque which read 'World Champion 1969, 1970, 1971, 1976'. Entering the previous ownership during 2002 via a Porsche mechanic who used to work at the late rally driver Roger Clark's Narborough (Leicestershire) franchise, this particular 924 Martini & Rossi was reportedly treated to "an extensive restoration using many original factory parts". Upgraded with a later Porsche 944 five-speed transaxle for more relaxed motorway cruising, 'TUT 85R' also sports 944 seats but only because the original ones need retrimming and the correct material has proven impossible to source. Otherwise, the coupe is stated to be to authentic specification throughout. Variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment), "very good" (interior trim) or "excellent" (engine, gearbox, bodywork, paintwork) condition, this recently serviced Porsche rarity is offered for sale with its original seats, restoration bills / photographs and fresh MOT certificate.
