1986 Ferrari 328 GTS / 288 GTO Evocation

Estimated at £25,000 - £30,000

Lot details
Registration No: T.B.A.
Chassis No: ZFFWA20B000065027
Mot Expiry: Aug 2008

Introduced at the September 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show the Ferrari 328 shot straight to the top of the 'junior supercar' league. Borrowed from the preceding 308, its tubular-steel chassis was equipped with coil-over double-wishbone independent suspension, front / rear anti-roll bars and potent disc brakes. Though, the adoption of a 288 GTO-specification steering rack brought notably sharper responses. Transversely mid-mounted, the newcomer's Tipo 105CB 'quad-cam' 32-valve V8 displaced 3185cc. Credited with developing 270bhp and 224lbft of torque, it was allied to five-speed manual transmission and gave suitably authoritative performance (0-60mph: 5.5 seconds / 158mph). Styled by Pininfarina, the 328 retained the same iconic silhouette as its forebear but added a larger 'egg crate' grille, new bumpers and reworked bonnet / boot lids etc. Available in both GTB (berlinetta) and GTS (spider) guises, the Ferrari also benefited from a revamped interior - again inspired by the 288 GTO - complete with improved switchgear, redesigned centre console and more cosseting seats. Beloved by the press and public alike, the 328 remained in production until 1989.

Finished in red with matching leather upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example was reportedly "despatched to Messrs. Vantagefield of Mayfair when new where it was fitted with a Koenig 288 GTO replica body kit, wide alloy wheels, and had a leather re-trim, all at a cost of £21,300". Cosseted by its Bahrain-based first owner (as evidenced by the parts invoices and service history on file), the Ferrari was imported to the UK some eight years ago by which time it had apparently covered just 51,107kms. Distracted by overseas work commitments, the previous keeper only added another 2,301kms to the odometer between 1999 and 2005. Believed but not warranted to have covered some 56,000kms (approximately 35,000 miles) from new, the car is said to have benefited from a Ziebart rust-protection treatment and the fitment of new Speedline Alesio wheels shod with fresh tyres in 1997. While, its Borla stainless-steel sports exhaust was seemingly installed at circa 50,000kms. Treated to cambelt changes during 1990, 1995, 1998 and 2006, this year has also seen the Ferrari receive a new water pump / belt, fresh alternator belt and service. Described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition but with an "excellent" engine, this 288 GTO look-a-like may not be able to fool the truly initiated, however, it is (a) a desirable Ferrari in its own right and (b) roughly a tenth the price of the real thing! Great fun, it is offered for sale with history file, MOT certificate valid until August 2008 and road tax valid until March 2008.
