After founder Walter Chrysler's death in 1940 and the conversion of manufacturing facilities from wartime work to making automobiles in peacetime, postwar Chryslers were rather humdrum and boring. However, fitting a new 'Hemi' V8 under the bonnets of selected 1951-53 Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge badged models restored some much needed pizzazz to the great American marque.
The hemispherical combustion chambers that gave the new engine its name was developed from Chrysler's research into high compression combustion. The thermal efficiency of the hemispherical combustion chamber gave high specific output at low compression ratios, a combination that was particularly desirable in the early 1950s when high octane petrol was not readily available. Intake and exhaust porting was efficiently across the cylinder head with short, direct ports that aided both flow and heat management.
Chrysler's first 331cu in hemi's 180bhp power output was higher than that of either of the overhead valve V8s introduced after WW2 by Cadillac (331cu in 160bhp) or Oldsmobile (303cu in 135bhp). By 1956, Chrysler's hemi had grown to 354cu in with bhp up to 340-355 according to compression.
The owner of this 1956-built Chrysler tells us that the Newport New Yorker is fitted with the rare 354cu in hemi-engine with dual-point ignition as used to power the famous Chrysler 'Letter' cars. In fact, the 2-door coupe body is the same, and only the radiator grill and much higher price are said to be different.
Please Note: This vehicle is MOT'd until May 2004.
