Lot details

Chassis No: SAJJHALG3AJ667695
Mot Expiry: March 2008

Launched in late 1986 as the long awaited successor to the successful and still well regarded XJ series III, the new XJ (codenamed XJ40) was a very important car to the newly independent Jaguar. Featuring squarer, more modern lines and incorporating a host of sophisticated electronics the new model was available in XJ6 or more luxurious Sovereign guises, the latter being distinguished by rectangular as opposed to four circular headlights. Both trim levels were available with 2.9 or 3.6 litre versions of the AJ6 engine first seen in the XJS, the top line Daimler badged model being a 3.6 only. In addition to being a sybaritic passenger's car the new XJ was an excellent driver's car with a superb ride mated to precise handling. Launched concurrently with the excellent new BMW 7-Series, period road testers were divided as to which was the better, although for many the Jaguar's sumptuousness over the more clinical BMW won the day. Both engines were later replaced by enlarged 24 valve units, the 3.6 by a 4.0 litre in late 1989 and the 2.9 by a much sprightlier 3.2 litre in September 1990. Now also available with a sports handling pack to increase its already strong driver appeal credentials, the 3.2 was distinguished by coming first in a comparison test of 11 luxury executive saloons in the February 1991 edition of 'Car' magazine.

The 1993 registered Sovereign 3.2 automatic for auction here is finished in gold with a beige leather interior and is believed but not warranted to have covered 63,000 miles from new, a full service history being present up to 61,000 miles since when the car has had "little use". Being offered for sale due to an "unexpected change of circumstances" the vendor describes the car as having an "excellent" engine and "very good" electrics, paintwork, bodywork, transmission, interior, chassis and wheels / tyres, having been "shod with a recent set of Pirelli tyres". Described to us as a "near perfect example of the model" this car will be driven to Kempton Park from the Midlands and will have MOT until March 2008 and tax until October 2007.
