The announcement of the 365GTB/4 Berlinetta Boxer was a revelation when it debuted at the 1971 Turin Motor Show in prototype form. Production of this all-new design would follow in 1973 and it is a testament to the design that it was virtually unaltered from that Turin prototype. The 365GTB/4 BB was significant in the fact that it was the first road-going Ferraris to enter production without a vee-configuration power plant. Putting its vast racing technology into road-going form, Ferrari drew from its Formula 1 and sportscar experience to build a flat-12 4.4 litre 'boxer' engine, which developed 360 bhp and propelled the new car to 175 mph. A composite of tubes and monocoque construction made up the mid-engine chassis and the engine was ingeniously placed above the transaxle allowing a shorter wheelbase to be achieved. Pininfarina put the icing on the cake with a sleek, low-slung Berlinetta coachwork that has influenced generations of sportscar design.
