Texan racer Carroll Shelby, who created the legendary Shelby AC Cobra 289, also applied his magic touch to the Mustang at a time when Ford were wanting to boost their image with the high performance influenced youth market.
In the early years, Ford shipped standard spec Mustang Fastbacks from Michigan to Shelby's Los Angeles workshops. Options were few (who needs a back seat anyway!). With added comp exhaust, anti-rollbar, uprated suspension, rev counter, scoop and stripes, and a 271bhp motor, the GT350 hit the tracks and became a winner most weekends. By 1966, though, Shelby Mustangs had become more street friendly and were in demand with a wider market.
As the new for 1967 Mustang bodyshell was made to accept the 390cu in motor, Shelby shoe-horned in the 428cu in V8 and the GT500 was born. A distinctive front end with unique Shelby bonnet scoop and quarter scoops and spoiler at the rear made the hottest snake of all stand out in the parking lot.
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback being auctioned here, with the unique to 1969-build bodyshell, is presented in its original colours of maroon with white interior. Listed on the Shelby Register and fresh to the London market, this entry has been restored to a very high standard over a number of years. The owner claims that his extremely muscular American is capable of disappearing over most horizons in 60 seconds - or less!
Please Note: This vehicle is MOT'd until April 2004 and not as the date given in the catalogue.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
