The second generation of 5-series executive cars was introduced in 1981 as the E28 and ran until 1988. The E28 was the first 5 Series produced with diesel engines (the 524d and 524td models) and with a petrol engine model specifically aimed at increased fuel economy (525e/528e model). The 525e uses a 2.7-litre 6-cylinder M20 petrol engine which is optimised for fuel economy and torque at low engine speed, rather than the traditional high revving characteristics of BMW straight-six engines.
This rare Lux E model manufactured in the final year for the E28 (1988), was first UK registered in February 1988 and has only had four keepers to date. Finished in the scarce colour of Luxar Beige and with Tan interior trim, the BMW was been fitted with special order colour coded bumpers, electric sunroof, green shade windows and the expensive option of Buffalo Rich comfort leather interior, all from factory. The 2693cc engine was rebuilt in 2016 costing circa £2,400 using a genuine BMW head and gaskets, mated to the automatic gearbox. In addition, the 5 series has had recent recommissioning works which included servicing, new battery, and reconditioned front and rear brakes. With 136,200 miles and an MOT until July 2021, the 525e is offered with a large collection of past MOTs and invoices, the original owner’s handbook and V5C.
