The Interceptor's creation was born out of the demise of the Austin-Healey, which had been such a long running export success story for BMC, for whom Jensen had done much sub-contract work. The West Midlands firm had already employed a 6.2-litre Chrysler motor to power its GRP-bodied CV8 and, in 1966, came up with their new model based on the CV8 chassis with Italian-styled bodywork made from steel, an FF (Ferguson 4WD) version coming out at the same time.
The resultant Interceptor quickly became the preferred choice of the movers and shakers of the day. In all, three Chrysler US V8 powered models were made until 1976, when what became a worldwide recession fuelled by two oil crises strangled demand and the West Bromwich production line shut down.
Offered here is a Mark 3 convertible with 7.2-litre J series engine which has been in receipt of a bare metal repaint, retrim, hood renewal and mechanical overhaul in recent years. The vendor tells us that the history file is superb with bills retained recording all the work carried out, there being £5000 worth of recent receipts, as well as old MOT test certificates and tax discs.
The current overall condition of bodywork, blue paintwork and tan interior is said to be good, whilst both 8-cylinder engine and 3-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission are reportedly in good order. The 62,000 miles displayed when entered for the sale is believed to be the genuine total mileage recorded since new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
