Clarke Sturdgess was a Formula Ford racer in the late 1960's and commissioned Eldon Racing Cars to build three racing cars in 1969 with Tony Hilder (he received one as payment) designing the bodywork. The cars were to be built for and raced in the Tarmac F100 championships in 1970 and 1971 and this they did with much success with Chris Lee and Mark Cole (who drove this car, under the Hot Car Magazine banner) as drivers.
We are informed that all three cars still exist - one is in America, one in Germany and chassis number 3 is the one we are offering for sale today. It was purchased in 1988 by the present owner as a 'barn discovery' and was fully rebuilt over the subsequent two years. In its first race at Oulton Park the original gear lever broke but not until a Chevron B8 had been overtaken and at the very next race at Brands Hatch it broke the class record on the Grand Prix circuit.
It has always been raced extensively with the HSCC and in 1994 it equalled the 2 litre lap record at Mallory, with a 1300cc engine mind, but the rules allowed a 1600cc which was duly fitted and yes you're right - more records tumbled including Spa's at 2:46.15secs. The highlight of the car's history was undoubtedly the winning of the RJB Mining Championship in 1997 but the fact that it came second in 1996 and 1998 showed just what a consistent and fast car she was.
It has a Tim Swadkin crossflow Ford unit with a dyno recording of 171bhp which is married to a Hewland Mk8/9 four speed gearbox. It comes with all its body and screen moulds together with suspension jigs, spare uprights, hubs and gear ratios and a new set of Dunlop treaded racing tyres and 6 spare wheels. (These can all be collected fron the vendor after the successful sale by the buyer).
It has proved to be a very quick and sorted car and comes with a history file that includes the now obselete FIA papers and HSCC documents and is potentially eligible for the World Masters Sportscar Series and Orwell Supersports Cup.
