Lot details
Registration No: XFO 890
Chassis No: T.B.A.
Mot Expiry: March 2003

To create the Austin-Healey 100/6 in 1956, BMC uprated the 4-cylinder 100/4 with the 2639cc 6-cylinder BMC C Series engine and lengthened the wheelbase by 2in to provide accommodation for 2 kids behind the bucket seats. A 2-seater version was also available, although few were made. After a couple of years, the model was then further uprated by fitting an enlarged 6-cylinder engine of 2912cc capacity to become the Austin-Healey 3000 from 1959.
The image of both the 100/6 and 3000 was greatly boosted by successful motor sport appearances, the works team rallying and racing both models. In fact, the Abingdon-based BMC Competition Department were the first to fit 3-litre motors under 100/6 bonnets and several early works 3000s started life as 100/6s. Since then, many private owners have done - and are still doing - the same.
According to the vendor, the 1959-manufactured and righthand drive Healey being offered here has been the subject of a complete bare metal respray in red and cream earlier this year. The declared to be 3-litre 6-cylinder engine is said to be in good order and the gearbox and overdrive overhauled. The dynamo has been replaced with an alternator, the wire wheels respoked and new tyres fitted. Although a new speedo was fitted 2000 miles ago apparently, the vendor tells that the total mileage is likely to be 40,051. There is nothing quite like a Big Healey. Traditional British sportscar motoring at its best - and entirely practical to own too.
