From the last year of W6 production
During the 1930s the advertising slogan “One in Four is a BSA” reflected the company's status as the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. Following the Depression, BSA was forced to economise its model range, which was reduced to ten models for 1932. However, there were three new 500s, a sidevalve and two OHVs, all with the 85 by 88mm bore and stroke shared with all BSA's 500cc singles, including the legendary Gold Star, right up to the unitary construction era of the 1960s. All three featured vertical cylinders and magneto ignition, with rigid frames and girder front forks. The varying specifications enabled the 500s to be treated either as brisk, sporty machines or as strong, torquey workhorses ideal for pulling sidecars. The sidevalve W6 model remained in production until 1936.
While the early history of this beautiful 1936 W6 is not known, it was in single-family ownership for between 30 and 50 years prior to its acquisition by the vendor in 2023. Prior to that, it spent around 20 years as a museum exhibit and although its older restoration remains extremely well-preserved, it has not been on the road since it emerged from museum display, so some recommissioning will be required. It is sold with the current V5C.
