Formerly a display model in a motorcycle dealership
One of the greatest off-road motorcycles of its era, the Yamaha XT500 was produced from 1976 to 1989 and brought the Japanese marque a multitude of competition successes. Powered by a four-stroke, 499cc single, the XT500’s most enduring claim to fame was its victory in the inaugural Paris-Dakar Rally in 1979, which it repeated in 1980. The model had previously been successful in the Paris-Abidjan-Nice Rally and was also campaigned widely in motocross—no doubt sales were helped by Heikki Mikkola’s overall victories in 1977 and 1978 Motocross World Championships with a 500cc Yamaha. Early XT500s used twin-valve engines, but a four-valve arrangement took over from 1981.
This terrific example appears in excellent condition, having spent several years on static display in a motorcycle dealership. Seemingly a highly original example, it appears to have led a much easier life than most XT500s and consequently represents an excellent opportunity for a collector to acquire one of the few survivors that hasn’t been beaten up on the off-road stages. It is sold without a registration or paperwork and will require some recommissioning if it is to be used on the road.
