The forerunner of the Bentley R Type was the MkVI, which was announced in 1946 and which featured a sturdy channel-section chassis with independent wishbone/coil spring front suspension and a live, leaf-sprung back axle. Although sharing the prewar B60 4257cc 6-cylinder engine with its Rolls-Royce sister model, the Wraith, the Bentley version did at least have a wilder camshaft and twin carbs. Although most MkVIs were fitted with the standard Pressed Steel of Oxford made 4-door saloon body, albeit hand-finished at Crewe (the same body being employed for the R-R Silver Dawn from 1949), many were customised by the coachbuilding industry.
From mid-1951, a larger 4566cc six was used to power both Rolls and Bentley equivalents as well as the R Type Bentley, which was made 1952-1955, the later cars having larger boots and an auto-shift option. The R Type was a sporting and yet very refined owner-driver model, which could cover long distances in great comfort.
The Merseyside vendor of the 1953-made R Type being auctioned here tells us that he is only the fourth owner. The grey over blue paintwork and maroon leather interior are reportedly good, the 4-speed manual gearbox in good order and the 4566cc 6-cylinder engine very good. We understand that the woodwork has been refurbished, and radiator, radiator chrome, battery and tyres have all been renewed, and an additional Kenlow electric cooling fan added.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
