Along with its sister model the BSA Rocket III, the three-cylinder, 741cc Triumph Trident was launched in 1968 as Britain’s answer to the wave of multicylinder superbikes initiated by the Honda CB750 and Kawasaki triples, and at launch it was ridden by Cycle World to 117mph. The final version was the T160, launched in November, 1974, and was much-modernised, with new features including electric starting and front and rear disc brakes. The five-speed gearbox of the T150V was carried over. Some changes had to be made to satisfy American safety and noise criteria, hence it also ended up with left-foot gear-change and new silencers. Sadly, production was brought to an untimely end by the collapse of Norton Villiers Triumph in 1976.
Imported into Britain in 1989, this example has been in single ownership since 1996 and carries an odometer reading of circa 3,600 miles, which early MOTs indicate is genuine since its arrival, although it has not been MOTed for over 20 years. It is fitted with alloy wheels, tri-spark ignition, a new starter motor, new Amal concentric carburettors and new tyres. Appearing in good all-around original condition for its age, we have been informed by the vendor that it runs and rides well. It is sold with the current V5C.
