Launched at the 1975 Milan Motorcycle Show for the 1976 model year, the Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans was a factory café racer powered by one of Moto Guzzi’s 90-degree overhead-valve V-twins, in conjunction with a five-speed gearbox and shaft-drive. Derived from the 750cc V7 Sport of 1971, the 850 Le Mans produced 71bhp and was said to be good for 130mph. A tamer roadster version, the T3, was produced, compared to which the Le Mans had higher-compression domed pistons, larger valves, and Dell’Orto 36mm carburettors. It is reckoned just 7,036 Le Mans were produced.
Remarkably, this 1978 Le Mans has been in single ownership since 1983 and has been preserved in a delightful unrestored condition. Showing three keepers between 1978 and 1983, it has always been garaged during the present ownership. It has been kept in regular use, except between 1991 and 1995 and 2010 and 2016. It was professionally recommissioned by MTS Classics in 2017, since when it has covered only around 250 miles year, bringing the total mileage to the 38,000 on the odometer, plus around 2,000 “lost” miles from a trip to Spain when the speedometer cable broke. It is said to run very well.
The Le Mans has been kept original “as far as practical” but the rear shock absorbers, petrol cap, horn, right-hand fuel tap, grips, rear indicator stalks and lenses, points cover and battery are non-standard. It has one original ignition key, but the steering lock key is missing, and we are advised the clutch slips at full power. It is supplied with spares including a set of Domino switchgear for the left-hand grip and a wiring loom conversion. This was bought following the breakage of the indicator switch and a roadside repair, although the repair continues to function. The original owner’s manual is included, with a few tools and a rear carrier which is not currently fitted.
