In 1951 a longer, wider Vauxhall Velox was launched, designated as the EIP series, and featuring a modern 'three box' shape and integral construction. The body was again shared with the four-cylinder Vauxhall Wyvern. The car was launched with the previous model's engine but with power output increased to 58bhp. A car with the original 2,275cc engine tested by The Motor magazine in 1951 had a top speed of 77.4 mph and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 23.7 seconds. In April, 1952, the Velox was re-designated as the EIPV series and received a new 2,262cc engine which had been in development for several years. This provided either 64bhp or, with a compression ratio improved to 7.6:1, 68bhp of power. A further test in 1952 by The Motor of the EIPV with the short stroke 2,262cc engine found the top speed had increased to 80.4 mph and acceleration from 0-60 mph to 21.4 seconds. The Australian coupé utility version continued on until officially withdrawn at the end of the 1957 model year. Nineteen fifty-five saw a significant facelift. Most obvious of the many cosmetic changes was a new front grille. More important was the introduction at this time of a sister model, christened the Vauxhall Cresta.
This rare Velox spent the first three years of its life in Malta, before being reimported and British-registered in 1957. It represents possibly the best E-type Velox on the market, after its comprehensive restoration reached completion at the end of 2025; previously, it had been off the road more than twenty years. It was stripped to the bare-metal, but no welding or replacement panels were required, with the vendor describing the floors and chassis rails as “perfect.” It received a £12,000 paint job in Jaguar Firenze Mica Metallic with a clear lacquer, followed by £5,000 expenditure on replating all the chrome, and £500 on a set of six brand-new radial tyres. Internally, the very good original seats and headlining have been retained, but new carpets and door cards were fitted.
A great amount of mechanical work was performed, including a full engine overhaul with new gaskets, hoses and so on. A brand-new wiring loom was installed, which brought a change from positive to negative earth, and the heater was renovated. The brakes were refurbished, the battery and exhaust were replaced and, to finish off, some whitewall wheel trims completed the rock ‘n’ roll-era look. Supplied with the V5C and original workshop manuals and handbooks, all it wants is to be driven, enjoyed and shown.
