Introduced in 1962, the MGB Roadster enjoyed an eighteen-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Based around a monocoque chassis featuring independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, its 1,798cc B-series four-cylinder engine was allied with a four-speed manual transmission. Capable of over 100mph, the provision of front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering greatly aided control.
Sporting a well-preserved older restoration, this MGB could be the ideal classic for the summer ahead. Despatched on September 24th, 1971, to the Hanley Garage of Stoke-on-Trent, it was first registered that November to Norman Morley of nearby Meirheath. As built, it was painted Blaze with Navy trim and a Black hood, plus Rostyle wheels, overdrive and a heater. In November, 1973, it passed to John Tweddle of Barlaston, and it ended up moving around Nottingham and Hertfordshire before it was acquired by its twelfth owner, Mr. Phillip Spokes, in 1988. He sold it to Miss Karen Everett in 1989, but bought it back again in 1994.
It appears to have been Mr. Spokes who conducted a very thorough restoration. A large file of invoices spans 1988 to 2000, with extensive works undertaken in 1989 and 1995. An undated written record explains how the MG was stripped back to a bare shell and restored with many new panels, with a large photographic record detailing the work. The car participated in the MG Owners’ Club’s National Concours in 1995 and 1996.
Since 2005, the MG has seen only sporadic use. We believe it to be in good order mechanically as it passed an MOT with no advisories in 2024. It is supplied with the current V5C, photocopies of the original logbook and old V5s, many invoices and MOTs, photographs of the bodywork restoration, and a BMIHT certificate.
