Amid the early ’70s craze for street scramblers, Triumph – a marque revered for its vivacious twins – produced the TR5MX, which combined a thumping 500cc single with the diminutive frame of the 250cc T25SS. A more sensible idea might have been to install one of its excellent 500cc twins into the same frame, which Triumph actually did but for the American market only, with the 1973-74 TR5T Trophy Trail (or Adventurer). Inheriting the engine from the much-loved T100C, but with softer valve timing and improved gearing, the four-speed TR5T was a hit with American dirt riders, and some 2,552 were produced.
This superb 1973 example was not exported to America until August, 1974, owing to industrial action at Meriden. It was bought new by an enthusiast in Houston, Texas, who appears to have kept it until 2019, when it was repatriated to Britain. A very thorough restoration was performed during 2020 and 2021 and a larger twin leading-shoe front brake was fitted, though the original hub is supplied. Recent use has included a visit to the Isle of Man for the Grand Prix and Classic TT, where it was ridden extensively across the island. This is probably one of the best examples of this rare model, and is sold with the current V5C and the original bill of sale.
