The Yorkshire based P and M concern were one of the leading Pioneer manufacturers who, like their Yorkshire based rivals Scott, displayed an innovative and independent approach to motorcycle design. Their heavyweight singles were easily identified thanks to the use of the engine as an integral part of the frame structure, essentially replacing the front frame downtube, a feature that had been employed at the outset in 1902 and would continue until production ceased in the 1960's. Panther introduced the first Model 100 for the 1932 season, with the machine quickly establishing itself as a favourite with the public, both as a solo and a sidecar tug, consistently accounting for half of the Cleckheaton concerns production. For the 1938 season Panther introduced a new 500cc model, the 95 complimenting the 600cc Model 100 with which it shared many features, the Model 100 and 95 essentially becoming the same except for capacity. Changes for the 1939 season included a new frame with a single seat pillar tube and a lowered front sidecar lug for the Model 100, which was offered in standard and De Luxe forms, the latter with twin headlights and a 50 watt dynamo. A new pressed steel primary chaincase replaced the cast alloy unit previously employed. Cost new in 1939 was £69 5s with a further £4 3s 6d being charged for the De Luxe version.
The Model 100 De Luxe offered dates from 1939. It was purchased by the previous owner in 1999 who undertook the machine's restoration. The engine is described as being in excellent condition following the restoration and the transmission as being good. The machine is finished to a high standard in the correct livery with black cycle parts complimented by a chromium plated fuel tank with cream panels. The electrical system is described as being in good condition with all Miller equipment to original specification.
The motorcycle is currently on SORN and is accompanied by a MOT certificate issued on the 27th September 2011. The motorcycle is accompanied by a file containing correspondence from the Panther Owners Club regarding the machine, which was despatched from the factory in January 1939, a couple of old tax discs, an owners manual information relating to the marque and model's history and a Swansea V5C.
