Greeves Motorcycles was founded by Bert Greeves in 1951 and produced a range of road machines and later competition mounts for trials, scrambles and road racing. The original company produced motorcycles from 1952, funded by a contract with the Ministry of Pensions for their Invacar, a three-wheeler for disabled drivers originally conceived for Bert’s disabled cousin and sales manager Preston Derry-Cobb.
Greeves’ range of 1953 models consisted of four single-cylinders – two road bikes and two off-roaders – plus a 250cc Anzani twin. The Anzani model was superseded in 1957 by the 25D Fleetwing, which used a Villiers twin and that was replaced in 1959 by the 25DC Sports Twin. The 32DC joined the range in 1960, with the 325cc 3T engine that Villiers had launched in 1957. The 3T was essentially a bored-out 250cc 2T, slightly more powerful with a claimed 16½bhp, but also considerably more torquey. With their scrambler-derived frames, sales of the roadsters were helped very much by Greeves’ off-road racing achievements, especially after Dave Bickers won the 1960 and 1961 European Scrambles Championships.
In single ownership since 2006 and described as “excellent” in all areas, this 1963 32DC was meticulously restored in 2005 by its previous owner, engineer Paul Pacey, who purchased it in 2003, after it was discovered and reregistered with the DVLA in 2002. It has only covered around 2,000 miles since completion and, although said to be running well, it has been out of use for a few years, so some recommissioning will be required. The current V5C is supplied.
