Lot 28

Lot 28 - 1938 Standard Flying Ten

1938 Standard Flying Ten

Estimated at £3,000 - £4,000

Lot details
Registration No: EKN 801
Chassis No: B9906
Mot Expiry: None

Along with the rest of the Flying range, the '10' introduced in March 1936 signalled Standard's embrace of the flamboyant styling trends that were sweeping both sides of the Atlantic. In contrast to its predecessor's conservative lines and upright stance, the Flying 10 sported an arched roofline, waterfall grille, bulbous wings and a beetle back complete with spilt rear windscreen. Built on a cruciform-braced, ladder frame chassis featuring all-round leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, it was powered by a 1343cc four-cylinder unit mated to four-speed manual transmission. Reputedly capable of 64mph and 33mpg, the handsome saloon provided dependable but not austere transport.
Finished in black with brown leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in good (chassis, gearbox, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or very good (interior trim, bodywork) condition. Reported to have had "only two keepers from 1963 to 2005", it is also said to have undergone a "thorough refurbishment" six years ago which included "the proper repair and not replacement of original body panels" as well as an engine rebuild "with new pistons etc". Understood to have covered "less than 1,000 miles" since due to the "ill health of the owner", potential purchasers are advised that its powerplant "still needs to be run in". Apparently retaining the majority of its factory-fitted trim even down to the carpets, this charming Standard is believed but not warranted to have covered just 82,456 miles from new. Riding on steel wheels shod with chrome hubcaps, it is offered for sale with buff logbook, 1938 sales catalogue, original instruction book, 'Running in your Flying Standard' pamphlet, Joe Lucas 'Electricalities' book, sundry wiring / lube charts etc as well as "much correspondence, route maps and notes of journeys made by a previous keeper in the 1940s and early 1950s".
